Gah.
Somehow I am tired of how people want to forget the past transgressions of our forefathers on others. It seems that the shame that should be felt is so easily sloughed off, because that was the past and that it wasnt me that caused the harm. However I feel that someone has to take responsibility of what happened in the past. We as a country were able to say that the Japanese internment in the US wasnt ethical, so why arent we able to acknowledge this to other cultures. We have caused harm to the peoples in the past and somehow we need to acknowledge it and take responsibility for it for healing to occur

I completely understand your point but, while I haven't forgotten what happened, I would rather put my efforts toward helping to make a less judgmental future rather than just sit back and feel guilty. I won't ever forget what happened to people of other races but there isn't anything I can do except help the cause. I put aside guilt or shame to make myself a better person toward them rather than seeing them and only thinking about how they have been wronged.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you, I think it is impossible to move forward if you don't acknowledge what happened in the past. It's just like our guest speakers said: History tends to repeat itself.
